Here’s my shopping guide to help you choose the best toys for your little one!
Great Ideas for Christmas or Birthday
I’m a thrifty mommy and I like to shop for toys mostly at consignment sales. I have found some of W’s favorite toys at consignment sales and I love it because they are so much cheaper, and are for the most part gently used.
Also, I always keep a look out for high priced items on sale anywhere around 25-30% off and on clearance from 50-75% off. Use Cartwheel & Redcard when shopping at Target, and always price match with Amazon Prime as well.
I have found in my experience the most popular toys for both girls & boys at 12-18 months old are:
1) Activity Cubes
Imagination Generation Wooden Wonders 5 in 1 Deluxe Activity Cube: This toy is great if your looking for something educational & entertaining. Perfect for 15-18 month olds! There are so many different kinds of activity cubes/blocks/centers out there to choose from. I prefer the wooden 5-in-1 activity centers because they are durable and each side of the cube is stimulating the young toddler’s mind.
2) Talking Plush Toy
Disney Finding Dory Talking Plush Nemo: There’s tons of talking plush toys to choose from… sesame street, paw patrol, & frozen. Pick what character your young toddler likes and watch them be amazed that the stuffed animal looks and sounds just like them in the movie or show.
Baby’s First Little Talker Doll: Every little girl I know loves dolls and especially the ones that talk and sing! I really like this particular doll because its so soft & easy for 12 month olds to push her tummy which will make for hours of fun.
3) Squeeze Animals
Little Treasure Animals & Spark Create Imagine Farm Animals: My son absolutely loves animals, especially the squeeze kind. He loves handing me all the animals for us to name, and practice making noises. They are so much fun for young toddlers imaginative play and can be incorporated into bath-time play as well!
4) Board Book Sets
Minnie Mouse Book Set & Paw Patrol Book Set: One thing I know about young toddlers is that they love books! They like small books and carrying them around, so what better toy then a board book set in carrying case! My son loves his Thomas & Friends set, plus they hold up longer and are great for 12 month & up.
5) Tech Toys
Here are few of my favorite educational, light & sound toys!
Fisher-Price Activity Play House: A fun toy that has it all… sorting shapes, music, and its educational! I like this toy so much because W loves taking the dog thru the door and down the slide.
LeapFrog Musical Rainbow Tea Party: Who said boys cant like girl toys-my son loves to pretend play with the kitchen set and play food. I got this toy for my daycare and all the kids enjoy singing along with it!
Vtech Touch & Teach Word Book: There’s talking books out there but nothing like this one. This electronic wood book will continue to teach little minds all the way to Pre-k with all its different learning modes! My son likes to point at everything and likes to listen to the songs.
Mr. Wheeler & Friends Car Carrier: This is a toy that is well loved by little toddler boy especially. My son W likes putting the cars back in the number doors and learns colors and numbers as he plays! Plus he gets to drive the carrier all over the house, and tries to put his other little cars inside it too.
6) Play Tents & Tunnels
Noah’s Ark Play Tent & Tent with Tunnel: My son loves to play peekaboo and these tunnels and tents are a blast for toddlers. Throw some ballpit balls inside or leave as is because it is wonderful imaginative play.
7) Building Blocks
Stephen Joseph Wood Blocks -Girl, Mega Bloks First Builders Big Building Bag & Melissa & Doug Classic Wood Stacking Train: I absolutely the wooden blocks and have several different kinds in the house. My son has a blast building towers and knocking them down. He really likes the stacking train and they help with fine motor skills! Got to have the Mega bloks too! They are great starter blocks for toddlers!
8) Ride-On Toy
Disney Drive Along Princess Ride-On & Disney Dusty Plane Ride-On: I highly recommend the Dusty Plane ride-on! Got this for W’s 1st birthday and it is absolutely a favorite in the house. Noises and lights are always a big hit, plus the propellers spin which makes it even more cool! When my daughter was a toddler, she had one similar and loved it!
I tend to splurge on occasion on high-priced items, usually depends if there is some sort of discount involved. With that said, if you see an item your young toddler will LOVE, keep your eyes peeled for toy sales, consignment sales and even swap shops on facebook for a good deal.
Here are a few of my favorites: Little Tikes Fire Truck, Little Tikes Princess Cozy Truck, Step2 Best Chef’s Kitchen Set, Little Tikes Pink Cook n’ Store Kitchen, Step2 Gather and Grille Playhouse, & Step2 Neighborhood Fun Center.
These items will last years and make so many lasting memories as they grow up! Most are great purchases for 18 month olds and older, but if your looking for something your 12 month old will like… its the kitchens!
I’d love to hear if you tried any of these toys and what you thought of them!
